have you hit the wall
yet? The steroid case of rampant doping in sports took on an additional meaning to me when I saw this statement in a local paper: "It's not cheating if everybody is doing it - and if you’ve got knowledge of what everyone is doing, and those are the real rules of the game, then you're not cheating." This is blatant 'situation' ethics; "everybody's doing it" so it's okay, how sad. My Dad told me once "If everybody's doing it, it's probably wrong." For a long time I contemplated that statement; I've come to the conclusion that Dad was right. I am becoming very weary of this kind of thinking; if not for God's Word and the support I find in individuals that are just as concerned, I would quickly run out of steam and give up the fight. Like a world-class sprinter in the stretch of a 800 meter race that realizes he has an 800 pound bear (so-to-speak) on his back and will not be able to kick to the finish line. But thanks be to God, the knowledge of absolute right and wrong, which never changes, provides the strength to endure. Will we ever learn that we can't get away with wrong-doing? In this case, the truth will eventually come out and careers and records will be tarnished. Secondly, the health of the athletes will deteriorate. The lives of their families and everyone in their sphere of influence will be harmed; and most important, they will ultimately face The Judge and have to give an account for the life they lived down here. The consequenses of sin are enormous. Sin creeps in appearing to be harmless but ends up being disastrous. My prayer is that they've "hit the wall", ran out of gas let's say, and are ready to repent. My hope is that they are changed by the renewing of their minds by choosing to live God's way through Jesus Christ. Oh, to know the joy of running the race free of the 800 pound bear of sin, with stamina to endure to the end. Are you weary today? Have you hit the wall yet? |
