"CONNECTIONS"
Answers to questions:
Old Testament Wars?
When we consider Old Testament Wars we must remember that the Word of God is historical, current, and futuristic. Also, it is inerrant and always purposeful. That is, the Bible records events that actually happen; past, present and future. Our sovereign God directs and allows all things and ultimately they fit into the plan that He established before the foundation of the world.
We must also remember that the God of the Old Testament is the same God in the New. He never changes. Everything He does, or allows, is right and just.
With that said, I would have to know which specific Old Testament War/s spurred this question to be able to put it into context with the rest of scripture. In general, God gave Israel the victory in several wars; not because they were worthy but because the nations in the land (before them) were desperately wicked. Additionally, it fit into His sovereign plan to ultimately redeem mankind. This theme (God using war to purge the wicked) is found throughout scripture; God also used the wicked, at times, to chasten His chosen, the nation Israel.
Mankind has been at war, with occasional breaks, since sin entered the world up to this very day, and will be at war until the Lord returns to put away sin. I marvel and how all of this is connected. The things of God are perfectly balanced and truly a mystery. War and discontentment is due to imperfection, but God will use imperfection to ultimately regain perfection.
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. Matthew 24:6
