ER err

subliminal suggestion?

ER, the popular television program depicting hospital emergencies prompted me to write this article. One scene involved a military couple (supposedly, on leave from the middle east). This emergency involved the wife finding out that she was pregnant after obtaining a leg injury. The issue occurred when she was found to be eight weeks pregnant but her husband had only been back for two weeks. Accused of infidelity, she reveals that she had been raped. The rape occurred in theater, or the warzone.

Well, after some convincing the husband is ready to extend forgiveness and compassion. With that settled the doctors advise her that a DNC can be performed to remedy the situation. This is where red flags began to wave and I was surprised. Her response was, "I'm going to have the baby, I'm not going to have an abortion." My heart jumped for joy but was crushed instantly as the next sentence was; "Pregnant women don't have to go back over there, I don't believe in this war anymore."

This is wrong on multiple levels. First, it is completely selfish. To consider saving a child’s life only to avoid going back to serve leaves much to be desired. Obviously, the rape didn't emotionally scar her as implied; the truth is that an abortion will. Also, having just received compassion she has no thought of extending the same to the unborn child. I believe this was a sloppy attempt by the shows producers to denounce the war in Iraq. It also reveals their lack of Godly principles by glorifying abortion.

Yes, rape is a horrible thing but what a testimony for everything that is right by not punishing a child for the sins of a rapist. Finally, to abort only compounds sin; the phrase "two wrongs don't make a right" comes to mind. Especially in God's economy.

Subtle, but bad TV; ER err.
